What is it?
Juvederm® Ultra Smile is a clear, dermal filler gel made of non-animal, highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid which comes from bacterial fermentation. It also contains the ingredient Lidocaine, a local anesthetic that can reduce needle pain and discomfort. With a similar formula to Juvederm Ultra 3, it treats the lip area to restore or add volume and definition to the lips.
How does it work?
Aging causes a reduction in hyaluronic acid, and this loss of volume can make the lips look thinner and less defined. When you inject it into your patient’s lip mucosa using a 27G needle, the hyaluronic acid holds moisture within the lips. The incease that the filler gives allows moisture in the lip mucosa thus gives the lips a plump look with more volume, greater definition, and even a smoother texture. In addition to restoring volume to the lips, the gel can enhance the lips with added volume and definition.
What are the side effects?
Common side effects could include redness, discoloration, tenderness, pain, swelling, and itching at the injection site. These side effects usually resolve spontaneously within about a week after you inject it into your patient’s lips. Contraindications include use in patients with a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or Lidocaine, use in patients with a history of anaphylaxis or severe allergies, and use immediately following a deep chemical peel, a superficial peel with severe inflammation, laser treatment, or dermabrasion. The contents of this filler gradually breaks down within the lips after a few months to leave no trace. Since it is made from hyaluronic acid that comes from bacterial fermentation, you do not need to administer an allergy test before injecting it into your patient’s lips.
When will my patients see results from an injection?
As you inject it into your patient’s lip mucosa, the hyaluronic acid gel holds moisture within the lips. This immediately restores volume to the lips while smoothing out the look of creased lips and giving the lips greater definition. Since dermal fillers tend to break down quickly in the lips because of lip movement, it should last about six to nine months. After a few months, your patients might want to suggest a follow up injection to maintain their results.
Why do doctors choose it?
JUVÉDERM® is one of the most trusted names in cosmetic fillers, and they created it specifically to treat the lips. You can use it to add volume to the lips, to define the vermillion border, to enhance the Cupid’s bow, and to correct the look of lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
